From a mining town commercial street to a stage for past stories
1827 (B.E. 2370)·2007 (B.E. 2550)
Conflicting information
This street was not originally created as a tourist attraction. It grew within Takua Pa old town, a port and water-trade center that later prospered during the tin-mining era. Chinese people from mainland China, Penang, and Singapore came to trade and mine, and shophouses, shops, hotels, coffee shops, and service businesses lined Thanon Udom Thara and Thanon Si Takua Pa.
The buildings on both sides of the street are therefore evidence of a multicultural town, including Chinese-style shophouses and colonial-influenced buildings linked to the Baba community. The street served as the town's commercial and residential spine, not as the pedestrian street it is today.
When the walking-street project began in 2007 (B.E. 2550), through cooperation among the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Phang Nga Office, Takua Pa Town Municipality, Talat Yai Community, and Senanuch Rangsan Community, the original street was turned into a public space for telling its history and reviving the community economy under the name “Takua Pa Old Town: Telling the Past”.
The mining town slowed down, but the old street did not disappear
1957 (B.E. 2500)·2022 (B.E. 2565)
Conflicting information
After mining companies closed and tin production declined, the economy of Takua Pa's old commercial district stagnated. Some buildings remained in good condition, while others deteriorated over time. Area studies indicate that the cultural street uses stories, food, local knowledge, and existing architecture as assets to bring people and income back to the district.
The project name later changed from “Takua Pa Old Town: Telling the Past” to “Takua Pa Old Town Cultural Street”. The Department of Internal Trade's market registry gives 17 December 2017 (B.E. 2560) as the establishment/promotional date, while news sources place the start of activities in 2007 (B.E. 2550). These should therefore be understood as separate milestones: the start of activities and the market's registration/promotion.
In 2022 (B.E. 2565), the province and local authorities were still holding green-season activities and offering free rides on pho thong trucks. This shows that the street was being used to distribute income and draw people back to the old district. No specific evidence was found that the entire street was damaged by the 2004 tsunami or that the entire street was registered as an ancient monument.
The Department of Internal Trade's market registry states that Takua Pa Old Town Cultural Street is on Thanon Si Takua Pa and Thanon Udom Thara. It opens on Sundays from 14.00·20.00 and activities are free to visit. The information identifies an administrator at the market-system level, but does not name a separate legal entity responsible for the street.
Today, the street still serves as a market and community learning space, with local food and sweets, basketry, handicrafts, performances, Baba dress, photo exhibitions, and street art. The old Sino-Portuguese buildings remain the main setting for activities. Some are well preserved, while others show signs of deterioration over time. No announcement of a major restoration project specifically for this street was found in the sources checked.
Archived news confirms that events continued at least in 2022 (B.E. 2565), with community activities on the street in 2024 (B.E. 2567). It can therefore be concluded that the street is still used as a cultural market and activity space for local people. Actual opening hours may change by season or according to the organizer's announcements.
